This February, let's show some love for our neighbors!
Swansons Nursery is proud to support Ballard Food Bank's efforts! We are passionate about making sure that kids in our community have access to healthy, nutritious food through the Weekend Food For Kids program and we are continually impressed by the way Ballard Food Bank serves our community with compassion and respect.
Many kids rely on school breakfasts and lunches for most of their food during the week. The Weekend Food For Kids program helps bridge the gap with a weekend’s worth of easy-to-prepare, nutritious food.
School staff, teachers, and family members identify students who would benefit from weekend meals. Students are also welcome to sign up for the confidential program on their own. Currently, bags go out each week to over 640 kids (and counting!) in 21 schools across Northwest Seattle.
Each week, the Food Bank packs bags with 3 dinners, 2 lunches, 2 breakfasts, and snacks including fresh produce. School staff and volunteers then discreetly distribute the bags to students on Thursdays or Fridays.
Beyond the weekly bags, program staff coordinate with summer schools and community centers to set up markets during the summer, and have been able to pilot a free produce market at our largest partner school to bring even more nutritious produce to students and their families.
